Genshin Impact is already free to play on PlayStation 4, with cross-play support between console, mobile, and Windows PC. Players can currently access the game on PlayStation 5 through backward compatibility. The upcoming PlayStation 5 version will likely not be a large change from the already available version — just optimized for the more powerful console. A release date for the PlayStation 5 version has not been announced; Sony said it’s coming “soon” in the spring.
Genshin Impact was originally released in September 2020 on Android and iOS devices, PlayStation 4, and Windows PC. It’s expected to come to Nintendo Switch, too. The game was originally shown off at E3 in 2019, and people immediately started comparing it to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. The game is similar in looks — but players love Mihoyo’s game for how it pairs heavy RPG influences and gorgeous style with gacha-inspired gameplay. For that, Genshin Impact quickly became one of 2020’s top games.
Mihoyo has continued to update Genshin Impact since its release, with new characters and systems rolling out consistently. There’s a massive community around the game, one that’s spilled outside of the game itself and onto TikTok, too.
